Title: Playing Atari with Saddam Hussein
Author: Jennifer Roy/Ali Fadhil
Publication date: Out in paperback on 6th September 2018
Playing Atari with Saddam Hussein is based on a true story of one boy’s experience of Operation Desert Storm (or Operation GRANBY) during the Gulf War. I have to be honest and say I knew very little about the Gulf War (especially not from the perspective of an Iraqi civilian) and I found this book fascinating. You see the confusion and horror of war through the eyes of a child, but also how resilient children are during times of trouble. Highly recommended.

Title: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe: Manga Classics
Author(s): Edgar Allan Poe, Stacy King, et al.
Publication date: Out now
This book was something completely different for me. I stepped out of my comfort zone and I am so glad I did! I love Edgar Allan Poe. I love graphic novels. But I have to confess to having stuck my nose up at manga in the past. I decided to give this a try and I was not disappointed. It has totally changed my perspective on manga and I apologise for judging it so harshly in the past!
What do you think you’ll read next?
I’m off work next week! Woohoo! So I am planning on getting lots of reading done. I have four short books and one longer one to get through, although this is subject to change as I’ll be off to the Edinburgh Book Festival and Book Fringe, so who knows what I’ll come back with from there.
