It’s Day One of the Halcyon Blog Tour and we’re opening with something exciting! But first a bit about the book.
Halcyon is a dark and disturbing book by Rio Youers. I was intrigued as it is not a dystopian novel as such – there is no apocalypse. No pandemic. No nuclear weapons. But there is the present day and the challenges we face. Violence. Terrorism. Racism. Xenophobia. Halcyon is a commentary on today’s society with a twist.
Martin, our protagonist, moves his daughters Edith and Shirley to Halcyon. An island where there is no time. No internet. No communication with the outside world. A haven. Or so he thinks. Edith has what some would describe as a gift – she has premonitions and can escape from the real world but entering a one she built herself. And someone wants to take advantage of that and will not let anyone stand in her way.
When I first received Halycon I had a bit of a shock. I wasn’t expecting it to be a whopping 528 pages long. As a book blogger, you tend to factor in how long a book will take you to read so I admit to being a bit put off at first. And then I read the first page. Actually, scratch that. The first line.
“She saw the man with no hands first.”
That was me sold. I could not put this book down. I was nearly late for work three times whilst reading this book and I reached for it during every lunch break.
It’s dark and disturbing but also thought-provoking. What sort of people do we want to be? Where are we going as a society? If you had the option to give up everything and move to an island like Halcyon, would you?
This book is perfect for dark, cold winter nights but I can’t promise you’ll sleep soundly afterward.

It looks like an interesting book. I understand about not sending books to people in other countries. It’s ridiculously expensive. Thanks for telling me about this one.
