WWW Wednesday – 12th June 2019

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Welcome back to WWW Wednesday. WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words.

Well, it’s been a minute since I did a WWW Wednesday post. Recently, I’ve been dealing with blogger burnout. I ended up going totally off the boil and only sticking to commitments, and even some of those I ended up missing.

I feel like I’m starting to get back into the swing of things. Unfortunately I’ve had a not great reading experience lately where I’ve just not had anything that’s blown me away (the last one was probably Vashti Hardy’s Wildspark which I could go on about all day).

Here’s hoping for more bookish joy. I hope you’re all having a good week.

What is WWW Wednesday?

For WWW Wednesday you answer the following questions:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What have you recently finished reading?
  3. What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I’m not quite sure where to start with my current read, Erin Stewart’s Scars Like Wings. The protagonist, Ava, was in a fire that caused severe burns to 60% of her body, including her face. The story picks up at the point where Ava is going back to school, and the challenges she faces in the process.

I decided to go into the book without knowing anything else – I don’t know anything about the author (i.e. whether she has personal – direct or indirect – experience with burns) or what research she did for this book, so I don’t have preconceived ideas, or quite frankly, criticisms.

I’m just over half way through at the moment and what I would say is that I’m getting a bit bored. I feel like many of the scenes in the book are very similar and it’s a bit slow. I shall persevere though, I’m not quite ready to give up on it yet.

What have you recently finished reading?

I have a few issues with Joe Heap’s The Rules of Seeing. I thought the premise of the book was good but I didn’t like the way it skimmed over the ethical considerations around restoring the eyesight of someone who has blind since birth. Unfortunately, I was unable to let that go and it coloured my impression of the book.

Calling all fellow readers of Ayelet Gundar-Goshen’s Liar! I need to know if you’ve read this book and how you felt about it. I gave this book two stars as it just didn’t come together for me. I know some people loved it, and I am really interested to know other people’s opinions either way. Be sure to comment below. I’ll be keeping my copy of this book purely for the cover which I just adore.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The next two books I have on my list are Tim MacGabhann’s Call Him Mine and Kate Russell’s My Dark Vanessa. Call Him Mine is quite short (look at that cover!), which is why I’ve picked two books. MDV looks bloody amazing and I am so excited to get stuck into it, even if it’s not out in the UK for another six months!
